National Hypertension Taskforce
Sydney Cardiac Specialists supports the roadmap recently released by the National Hypertension Taskforce to reduce the burden of high blood pressure in Australia
The Goal: To improve blood pressure control from 32% to 70% of Australians by 2030
The Challenge:
- One in three Australian adults have hypertension (6.8 million), with about half (3.4 million) unaware of their diagnosis
- Currently only 2.2 million Australian adults (32% of the hypertensive population) are aware they have hypertension and have their blood pressure under control
- Australia’s blood pressure control rates compares poorly to other high income countries (eg 68% in Canada)
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure is the leading cause of preventable deaths in Australia, mainly due to stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, heart failure and dementia.
- A significant proportion of our population (4.6 million) are putting themselves at risk through lack of both awareness and treatment of hypertension
