Dr James Weaver is an interventional cardiologist with hospital appointments at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St George Private Hospitals. He has a teaching and research appointment as a clinical academic senior lecturer at the University of Sydney. Dr Weaver's clinical expertise is coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention. His interests include stenting of complex lesions, particularly chronic total occlusions, as well as radiation minimisation in the cardiac catheter laboratory.
Dr James Weaver completed medical school at University of New South Wales and underwent prevocational training at St George Hospital, Sydney. He completed his cardiology and interventional cardiology training through St George Hospital. Through UNSW, Dr Weaver completed his PhD in evaluating methods of measuring heart attack size in patients using cardiac MRI. He completed a further 12 months of training in coronary angiography and stenting in the Ottawa Heart Institute, Canada.
Dr Weaver was a staff specialist interventional cardiologist at St George Hospital for 8 years and was then appointed at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2018. This staff specialist position involves performance of coronary angiography, clinical cardiology, teaching and research. Performing and teaching coronary intervention (stenting) includes the full spectrum of techniques for chronic total occlusion intervention, a skill only acquired by a handful of interventional cardiologists within Australia. He is director of the cardiac catheter laboratory at St George Private Hospital and director of The Solomon Foundation, a charity for provision of medical care in the Solomon Islands.
